William was probably the son of Henry and Martha Ann Paling (née Wilkinson). Both Henry and Martha were born in Nottingham in about 1858. They were married in 1875 (reg. Radford) and according to the details given by the widowed Martha on the 1911 Census they had seven children of whom only three survived: Samuel b. 1876, William b. 1878 (A/M/J) and Edith Nellie birth registered 1887 (J/F/M). In 1881 Henry (24), a hosier warehouseman, Martha (24), a hose mender, and their sons Samuel (4) and William (2) were living on Thorneywood Rise, Sneinton, as boarders in the household of James Wilkinson and his wife Catherine, who were probably Martha's parents. By 1891 they were living on Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton, with their three children, Samuel a coach maker, William and Edith (4). The family had movd to 9 Ritson Terrace, Nottingham, by 1901 but only William a hosiery packer and Edith an errand girl (warehouse) were living with their parents. William's father had died by 1911 and his widowed mother Martha was living on Brook Street, Sneinton, with another widow who was the head of household. William's two siblings have not yet been traced on the 1911 Census but were included on an 'In Memoriam' notice to William published in the local paper in 1916. William married Agnes Ada Chapman at Nottingham Register Office on 12 October 1901. They had two children, Henry (Harry) Edward b. January 1902 and Doris Elizabeth b. June 1903. In 1911 the family was living at 6 Stilton Terrace, Norton Street, Radford, Nottingham; William was a lace warehouseman and Agnes a shirt button holer. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, Agnes was living on Sherborne Road, Nottingham, with Henry, a boiler washer (railways), and Doris, a cigarette machine attendant. Agnes died in 1953.

No record has yet been found of an Agnes Ada Chapman, born Nottingham, in the corresponding periods. However, an Agnes Ada Chapman (30), a stay machinist, was recorded on the 1901 Census living on Walker Street, Sneinton, with her widowed father, John Chapman (b. Herts).
