Family History

Robert Dames was born in 1886 in Nottingham and was the son of John a general labourer and Elizabeth Dames née Jones of 27 Ossington Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1843 in Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Jones was born in 1846 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 in Nottingham and went on to have 9 children, all of whom were born in Nottingham and were, Annie b1877, Clara b1879, Ernest b1880, Gertrude b1883, Robert b1884, Catherine b1888, Arthur William b1891, Edward b1892 and Thomas b1896. Robert married his wife Clara Mather (b1879 Nottingham) in 1905 in Nottingham, they lived with his parents following their marriage. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Ossington St, Alfreton Road, Nottingham and are shown as John Dames 68 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 65 yrs and his married son Robert 27 yrs a painter and his wife Clara 32 yrs a cotton winder, and their single children William 21 yrs a doubler in lace trade, Edward 19 yrs a bricklayers labourer, Thomas 15 yrs a doubler in lace trade.

Military History

Private Robert Dames enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action on 10th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Extra Information

His brother Arthur William Dames also served in the Great War , he served as Gunner 152633 with the 38th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and did on 15th May 1918, he is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
