Family History

Bernard Barber was born in 1884 at Nottingham and was the son of Frank a pawnbroker and of Sarah Barber née Allsebrook of 5 Auburn Terrace, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham. His father Frank Barber was born in 1862 at Sneinton and his mother Sarah Allsebrook was born in 1867 at Nottingham, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , Bernard b1884, Ellen 1886, Leslie b1889, Vincent b1893 and Olive Barber b1898 all were born in Nottingham . In 1911 Census he and his family are living at 4 Berridge Avenue, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as Sarah 44 yrs married she is living with her children Bernard 27 yrs a lace designer, Leslie 22 yrs a pawnbroker, Vincent 18 yrs a telephone assembler and Oliver 13 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census he father Frank is living at 5 Auburn Terrace, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham, he is shown as being 49 yrs and a pawnbroker manager, he is living at he address with Eliza Jane Ogle 33 yrs his housekeeper. Bernard married his wife Maria Martin (born 1887) in 1913 and was the father of Rosie born 1913 and Bernard Barber born 1917 he was born after his father's death and obituary (see below) at the time of his death the family were living at 171 Norton Street, Radford, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Bernard Barber enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 6th April 1917 and is buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy Grave Reference: IV.A.20.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 28 April 1917: 'Barber. Killed in action Good Friday, Private Bernard Barber, Sherwood Foresters, age 33. Wife and child, 171 Norton Street, Radford, late of Berridge Road. Mother, sisters, brothers.' In memoriam published 6th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BARBER. – In loving memory of Bernard Barber, killed in action April 6th (Good Friday), 1917. – Loving wife and children. “BARBER. – In loving memory of Bernard Barber, killed in action April 6th (Good Friday), 1917. – Ever loving mother, sisters, brothers.” In memoriam published 5th April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BARBER. – In loving memory of Bernard, killed in action April 6th (Good Friday), 1917. – Loving wife and children. “BARBER. – In loving memory of Bernard, killed in action April 6th (Good Friday). – Loving mother, sisters, and brothers. “BARBER. – In loving remembrance of my dear brother, Bernard, killed in action April 6th.
