Harry Jarvis

Harry Jarvis was born in 1894 at Ollerton and was the son of Benjamin, a farm labourer, and Jane Jarvis née Cartwright, of Ollerton. His father Benjamin was born in 1857 at Elston; he died in 1897 aged 40 yrs. His mother Jane Cartwright was born in 1870 at Norwell. They were married on 7 August 1888 at Norwell St Lawrence; the marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district. Benjamin and Jane had the following children: Edwin b1888 Norwell Woodhouse, Elizabeth b. Norwell Woodhouse birth registered 1890 (J/F/M Southwell), Rose/Rosa b1891 Ollerton, Harry b1893 Ollerton, William b1895 (registered J/F/M Southwell) Ollerton and Charlotte b1896 Perlthorpe bap. Perlethorpe St John 4 October 1896. In 1891 Benjamin (34) and Jane (21), were living on Boughton Road, Ollerton, with their two children Edwin (2) and Elizabeth (1). Also in the household on the night of the census was Jane's sister, Charlotte Cartwright (11). Following his father's death in 1897 Harry's mother remarried in 1899 to Christopher Hazard (also Hazzard); the marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district. In the 1901 Census the family was living at Hurts Yard, Main Street, Kneesall, and were shown as Christopher Hazzard 35 yrs, an agricultural worker, who was living with his wife Jane Hazzard 31 yrs their daughter Beatrice Ellen (birth registered 1901 J/F/M Southwell) and Jane's children who were listed as Christopher's stepchildren: Edwin Jarvis 12 yrs, Rose Jarvis 9 yrs, Harry Jarvis 7 yrs, William Jarvis 6 yrs and Charlotte Jarvis 5 yrs. Christopher Hazzard died in 1904 (J/A/S Southwell) and in 1911 his widow Jane was living in Eakring, Newark, with her eldest son, Edwin (22), a wagoner on a farm, who was head of household. Also in the home were Jane's two children, Elsie May Hazard (6) and Francis Denis Hazard (3). Both children were born in Kneesall, Elsie May in 1905 (A/M/J Southwell-Cartwright) and Francis Denis in about 1908 (birth registration not yet identified). Jane and Christopher's daughter Beatrice Ellen may have died as there is a record of the death of a Helen Beatrice Hazzard (b. abt 1901) whose death at the age of 4 was registered in 1905 (J/F/M Southwell); there is no corresponding birth registration for a Helen Beatrice Hazzard/Hazard. Charlotte Jarvis (15) was also living in Eakring in 1911, employed as a domestic servant in the household of James Wills, a farmer, and his wife, while William (16) was a cowman, living in Kneesall in the household of William Hurt, a farmer, and his wife. Also in the 1911 census we find Harry living at Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire. He was shown as being 17 yrs old, single and a servant (horseman) and living with Edward Hutchinson 25 yrs, a farmer, and his wife Marion Hutchinson 28 yrs. Harry married Elizabeth Hurt in 1914; their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district (O/N/D). They went on to have 2 children, Percy Davis born 11th December 1914 and William Arthur born 31st January 1916. His wife Elizabeth Jarvis died in 1916, she was aged 27 yrs; her death was recorded in the Southwell Registration District. Harry's pension card shows that his two sons had a guardian, Mrs Sarah Ann Hurt of Eakring, Elizabeth's mother. Elizabeth had been living with her mother in Eakring in 1911; Sarah Ann (45) single, a farmer, was head of household with Elizabeth (22) assisting in the home/farm. Also in the home was Francis Hurt (4 b. 1906 J/A/S Southwell), Sarah's grandson, and George Bonner (45) a farm manager.
