Joseph was born in 1884 in Aden and was the son of the late James and Mary Shackleton née Butterworth of 23 Vernon Avenue, Old Basford, Nottingham. In the 1911 census he is with the 2nd battalion Lancashire Fusiliers in barracks at Assaye Military Barracks , South Tedworth Hampshire , he is single 26 yrs of age and a soldier.

Military History

Corporal Joseph Shackleton, enlisted at Dublin and served with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He landed in France on 22nd August 1914 and within 4 days was killed in action on 26th August 1914. He has no known grave his name is commemorated on La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial.
