William was born in 1884 in Nottingham and was the son of Charles a general hawker and Annie Rudd née Edwards . His father was born in 1848 in Nottingham and his mother Annie Edwards was also born in 1848 in Nottingham, they were married in 1869 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children : - Eliza Jane b1874, Mary Ann b1877, Ada b1878, Ernest b1882, William b1884 and George b1887, all were born in Nottingham. Williams mother Annie died in Nottingham in 1898 aged 52 yrs and his father Charles died in 1907 in Nottingham aged 57 yrs. William married his wife Rosetta Stanley on 1st August 1904 at St Albans Church, Nottingham, she had a son James Stanley born 8th June 1905 which William adopted as his own. In the 1911 census the family are living at 55 Arnold Road, Basford and are shown as William 27 yrs a hawker of fruit he is living with his wife Rosetta 27 yrs and their son James Stanley 5yrs.
Private William Rudd, enlisted on 11th December 1915 in Nottingham , he was 33 yrs and 6 months of age, he was living at 55 Arnold Road, Basford, Nottingham , his next of kin was his wife Rosetta of the same address, he was a fish and fruit salesman. The following day he was placed into the reserves. On 11th October 1916 he was mobilised and posted to the Sherwood Foresters with service number 6344 on 13th October 1916. He was transferred to the 8th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, on 31st December 1916. he embarked from Folkstone on 20th December 1917 and arrived in Boulogne the same day. He received a shell wound to his chest on 17th July 1918 and returned for treatment to England to the 2nd Southern General Hospital at Southmead Bristol. He died at this hospital of wounds and septic pleurisy and broncho pneumonia in both lungs on 31st July 1918. His body was returned to his family and he is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.
In memoriam published on 31st July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “RUDD. – In loving memory of Pte. W. Rudd, 8th North Staffs., died of wounds July 31st, 1918.Upright and just in all his ways, honest and faithful to the end of his days, forgotten to the world by some he may be, but dear to our memory he ever will be. – From loving wife and son. “RUDD. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. W,m. Rudd, died of wounds July 31st, 1918. – Sadly missed by Ada, Eliza, Bill, and Ted. “RUDD. – In loving remembrance of Pte. W. Rudd, died of wounds July 31st, 1918.
