Herbert Poole was born in 1894 born Herbert Poole Ryan he was the son of Elizabeth Ryan of 118 Park Lane Old Basford. His mother Elizabeth Ryan was born in 1871 at Unston, Derbyshire, she had a further child Ethel Poole Ryan born 1892 in Arnold, she was married in 1894 the marriage being recorded in the Basford Registration District to James Poole born 1871 at Basford. they went on to have the following children all born in Old Basford, James b1895, Frances b1900, Thomas b1904, Donald b1906 and Annie b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Broomfield Place, Park Lane. Old Basford and are shown as James Poole 40 yrs a bricklayers labourer, he is living with wife Elizabeth Poole 40 yrs and their children Ethel 19 yrs a winder, Herbert 17 yrs a hosiery hand, James 16 yrs a hosiery hand, Frances 11 yrs a scholar, Thomas 7 yrs a scholar, Donald 5 yrs and Annie 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Herbert Poole enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Old Basford, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and having no known grave hs name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
