Arthur Hallam was born in 1897 in Basford and was the son of William a grocer/storekeeper and Maria Hallam née Severn of 149, Denman St., Nottingham. His father William was born in 1871 and his mother Maria Severn was born in 1870, both were born at Basford , they were married in 1893, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Basford, Arthur b1897, George b1899, Horace b1902 and Frank b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 149 Denman Street, Radford and are shown as William 40 yrs a grocer/storekeeper, he is living with his wife Maria 41 yrs and their children, George 12 yrs a scholar, Horace 9 yrs a scholar and Frank 9 yrs a scholar, Arthur is not at the family home on the night of the census, it has not been possible to identify his whereabouts on the night.

Military History

Private Arthur Hallam enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion, Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 1st August 1917 and is buried in Bulwell (Northern) Cemetery. His date of death is given as 1st August 1917 August 1917 on the Soldiers died in the Great War and soldiers effects register however as 31st July 1917 on cwgc and family headstone.
