Thomas Gee was born in 1897 at Nottingham and was the son of Thomas a railway waggon builder and his second wife Jane Eleanor Gee née Mortimer, of 3 Wallis Street, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1849 at Radford and married his first wife Mary Ann Lavender (b1853) in 1874 in Nottingham, they had the following children, Edmund Francis b1880, Ethel May b1883 and Eveline b1886. Mary Ann died in 1889 age 36 yrs. His father Thomas went on to marry his second wife Jane Eleanor Mortimer in 1890 at Nottingham, they went on to have a further 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Mary Clara b1892, Bertha Cecelia b1895, Thomas b1897, Lucy b1900 and Fred Harold b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Park Lane, Old Basford and are shown as Thomas 62 yrs a railway wagon builder, he is living with hgis second wife Jane Eleanor 46 yrs and his children, Ethel May 28 yrs a hosiery machinist, Eveline 25 yrs a gee jennier, Mary Clara 19 yrs a perfume packer, Bertha Cecelia 16 yrs a blouse machinist, Thomas 14 yrs a hosier brushing machinist, Lucy 11 yrs a scholar and Fred Harold 9 yrs a scholar.
Private Thomas Gee, enlisted at Nottingham, originally landing as a reinforcement to the 1/7th Battalion (Robin Hood Rifles) on 18th August 1915, he later saw service with 2/8th and 2/5th battalions prior to his transfer to the 10th. He served with “B” Company, 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th October 1918. He is buried in Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery Montay.
Obituary published 9th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GEE. – Killed in action October 20th, 1918, Pte. T. Gee (Tommy), Sherwood Foresters, the dearly beloved second son of Thomas and Jane Eleanor Gee, 3 Wallis-street, Old Basford, in his 22nd year, after four years' service. The supreme sacrifice. R.I.P. – Deeply mourned by his sorrowing father, mother, brothers and sisters, aunt Harriett and Mabel, Herbert (in France).” In memoriam in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 20th October 1919 :- “GEE. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. T. Gee, Sherwood Foresters, 3 Wallis-street, Old Basford, killed in action October 20th, 1918. To-day recalls sad memories. – From his loving mother, father, sisters, and brother. “GEE. – In loving remembrance of Pte. T. Gee, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action near Le Cateau October 20th, 1918.
