Family History

Henry Gee known as Harry was born in 1896 at Basford and was the son of the late William a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Gee née Cook of 98 Vernon Road, Old Basford. His father William was born in 1852 at Lenton, he died in 1908 aged 56 yrs, his mother Elizabeth Cook was born in 1854 at Whitwick, Leicestershire, they were married on 15th April 1872 at Sneinton and went on to have 12 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Ruth b1872, Annie b1874, Sarah b1875, Mary Jane b1880, Ada b1881, Wiliam b1884, Thomas b1888, Mabel b1894 and Henry b1896 all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Fox Grove, Old Basford and are shown as Elizabeth 57 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Mary Jane 31 yrs a laundress, Mabel 17 yrs a machinist and Henry 15 yrs a hosiery brusher.

Military History

Private Harry Gee enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Basford, he served with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 3rd June 1915 and was killed in action on 25th September 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
