Family History

Arthur Allen was born in 1897 at Basford and was the son of Edward James a shoemaker and Annie Allen of 24 Vernon Road, Basford. His father Edward James was born in 1861 at Tannington, Suffolk, his mother Annie was born in 1863 at Basford, they were married in C1889 and went on have the following children all born in Old Basford, Edgar Allen b1890, Harry b1893, Emma b1895, Arthur b1897 and Florence b1903. In the 1911 census the family are living at 247 Vernon Road, Old Basford and are shown as Edward James Allen 50 yrs a shoemaker, he is living with his wife Annie 48 yrs and their children, Harry 18 yrs an iron moulder, Arthur 14 yrs a scholar and Florence 8 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Arthur Allen enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Old Basford, he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd October 1916 and is buried at Bancourt British Cemetery
