Charles was born in 1894 in Carlton on Trent and was the son of Arthur a general labourer working for the local council on the roads and Emma Hickman née Mount. His father Arthur was born in 1862 in the village of Carlton , his mother Emma Mount was born in 1857 in Wollaton, Nottingham , their marriage in 1888 is record in the Basford registration area, they went on to have the following six children: - Harry b1892, Charles b1894, Lucy Ruth b1897, James Arthur b1899, Edith Mary b1900 and Frank b1902, all the children were born in Carlton on Trent. In the 1911 census the family are living in the village of Carlton and are shown as , Arthur 49 yrs , a general labourer on the roads , he is living with his wife Emma 54 yrs and their six children:- Harry 19 yrs a domestic gardener, Charles 17 yrs A Domestic gardener, Lucy Ruth 14 yrs, James Arther 12 yrs a scholar, Edith Mary 11 yrs a scholar and Frank 9 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Charles enlisted into the Army at Doncaster and served with the 3rd battalion Coldstream Guards , according to his medal index car he first entered a theatre of war in France on 3rd October 1915 . He was killed in action on 15th September 1916, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
