Thomas Offiler was born in 1876 at Shardlow and was the son of the late Robert Offiler a gas stoker and Sophia Offiler née Clifton of Cambridge Street, Radford. His father Robert was born in 1857 at Basford, he died in 1918 aged 61 yrs, his mother Sophia Clifton was born in 1857 at Warborough, Derbyshire, she died in 1911 aged 54 yrs, they were married on 28th June 1875 at St James Church, Derby and went on to have the following children, Thomas b1876, Caroline b1879, Gertrude b1882, John b1884, Arthur b1886, James b1888, Robert b1890 and George b1893, all were born at Basford except Thomas who was born Shardlow. Thomas went on to marry his wife Annie Elizabeth Pygott in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, William b1899 at Carrington, their remaining children all born at Basford were, Annie b1902, Thomas b1906, Nellie b1907 and Robert b1909, they lived at 39 Monsall Street, New Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Monsall Street, New Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas Offiler 34 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 36 yrs and their children, William 12 yrs a scholar, Annie 9 yrs, Thomas 5 yrs Nellie 4 yrs and Robert 2 yrs of age.
Private Thomas Offiler enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at New Basford, he served with the 3rd battalion Royal Fusiliers. He landed in France on 2nd June 1915 and was killed in action on 29th September 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 20 October 1915: 'Offiler. Killed in action September 29th, Private Tom Offiler, aged 39 years. Wife and children.'
