Alfred John Field was born in 1895 in Cubitt Town, Poplar, London and was the son of James William a paint grinder and Elizabeth Field née Allen of Pear Tree House Elson Street New Basford Nottingham. His father James William was born in 1868 in Whitechapel, London and his mother Elizabeth Allen was born in 1869 at Enfield, Middlesex, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Stepney Registration District, they went on to have 5 children, Grace E b1890,William J b1892, Lillian b1896, Alfred John b1895, Esther Ellen b1898, all were born in Poplar, London. In the 1911 census the family are living at 109 Stebondale Street, Cubbitt Town, Poplar and are shown as, James William 43 yrs a paint grinder, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 42 yrs and their children, William 19 yrs a labourer, Alfred John 16 yrs a labourer and Esther Ellen 13 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Gunner Alfred John Filed enlisted at Stratford, London and served with the 127th battery 29th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 18th October 1917 and is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery Grave Reference: 12.I.19
