George Crossland (junior) was born in 1898 at Beeston and was the son of George Crossland (senior) and Sarah Crossland née Hardy of 35 Palm Street, New Basford, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1868 at Nottingham, his mother Sarah Hardy was born in 1874 at Beeston they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Herbert b1897 Beeston, George b1898 Beeston and Edward b1908 Basford. In the 1911 census the family were living at 5 Palm Street, New Basford, Nottingham and were shown as George 43 yrs a lace maker, he is living with his wife Sarah 37 yrs and their children, Herbert 14 yrs a bleach works stove boy, George 13 yrs an errand boy in a carriage works and Edward 3 yrs of age.
Private George Crossland enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Basford, he initially served with the service number 31119 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was serving with the Highland Light Infantry when he was killed in action on 28th November 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval
