Family History

Geroge Crooks was born on 2nd March 1881 in Sneinton and was Baptised on 5th June 1881 at Lowdham and was the son of George Crooks a railway labourer and Mary Crooks, née Foster. His father George was born in 1848 in Milford, Derbyshire and his mother Mary Foster was born in 1843 in Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1875, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have the following children , Amos b1876 Burton Joyce, George b1881 Nottingham, John b1883 Nottingham and Florence b1887 Nottingham. His father George died in 1894 at Nottingham, he was 46 yrs of age and his mother Mary died in 1907 in Nottingham she was 64 yrs of age. In the 1901 census the family were living at 1a Pennyfoot Street, Nottingham, and shown as Mary head of the family 58 yrs a widow, an office cleaner , she is living with her children Amos 25 yrs a railway labourer, George 20 yrs a railway labourer , John 16 yrs a joiners apprentice and Florrie 14 yrs a lace worker.

Military History

Private George Crooks, enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 27316 in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, later transferring to the 10th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 8th June 1917. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, grave reference 15.J.3a
