Walter Montgomery Booth

Walter was born in 1896 (O/N/D) the only son of James and Edith Booth (nee Montgomery). Both James and Edith were born in Nottingham, James in 1877 (J/A/S) and Edith also in 1877 (O/N/D). They were married in 1896 (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham). According to the information they provided on the 1911 Census they had been married for 15 years and had had six children of whom only five were still living at the time of the census. Five children were named on the census between 1901 and 1911: Walter Montgomery (b. 1896), Florence Hilda (b. 1901 J/A/S), Edna May (b. 1903 J/A/S), Phyllis Irene (b. 1907 J/A/S) and Violet Leonora (b. 1909 O/N/D, d. 1911 O/N/D). All the children were born in Nottingham. In 1901 James (23) a lace dresser, and Edith (23) also a lace dresser, were living at 2 Earl Place, Mansfield Road. On the night of the census Walter was staying with his widowed maternal grandmother, Sarah A Montgomery (49), a laundress, at 28 Hubert Street, Hyson Green. Also in his grandmother's household were her two daughters, Florence (27) a curtain folder, and Gertrude (18) a lace finisher, and her son Leonard (12). By 1911 James (33), a van driver for a lace warehouse, and Edith (33), a lace worker, were living at 28 Lambert Street, Nottingham with their five children, Walter (14), an errand boy, Florence (9), Edna (7), Phyllis (3) and Violet (1). Sadly, Violet died aged two at the end of the year; she was buried on 16 December 1911. Also in James' household in 1911 and described as boarders were James' married sister-in-law, Gertrude Brookbhouse (28), and her daughter Sylvia Brookhouse (under 1 month) and Gertrude's husband, Arthur Ernest Brookhouse (31), a house painter, who was described as a visitor. This arrangement suggests that Gertrude was staying with her sister's family for a period after the birth of her daughter. Gertrude and Arthur were married at St Paul's church, Nottingham, on 4 March 1904 and their daughter, Sylvia, was born in 1911. Arthur attested in 1915 and Sylvia was the only child recorded on his service documents. He served in the Sherwood Foresters (Robin Hood Rifles) during the war (3627) but was discharged on 22 October 1917 as he was no longer physically fit for war service. He died in 1941. Walter's mother, Edith, died in 1947 aged 70 (death registered September Nottingham) and his father, James, in 1955 aged 77 (death registered March Nottingham).
