Family History

Frederick Hurworth was born in 1876 at Bradford and was the son of William a book binder and Emma Hurworth née Rowlands. His father William was born in 1846 in Leeds and his mother Emma Rowlands was born in 1851 at Oldham, they were married in 1873 at Leeds and had a further 5 children. Frederick married his wife May Tunnicliffe in 1900 at Derby, their first child Albert Frederick was born and died in 1908 at Derby, they went on to have 2 further children, Gladys born 14th August 1910 and Ernest born 18th July 1913. they lived at 7 Hope Cotttages, Maud Street, New Basford, Nottingham. In the 1911 census Frederick and his family are living at 45 Depot Street, Derby and are shown as Frederick 34 yrs a motorman on tramways, he is living with his wife May 37 yrs and their daughter Gladys May 7 months. Following his death his widow May received a pension of 21 shillings and sixpence for herself and her two children, to commence on 1st May 1916.

Military History

Lance Sergeant Frederick Hurworth enlisted at Sheffield on 11th May 1914, he gave his age as 36 yrs and 8 months and his occupation as that of a book binder, he stated he had previously served with the 1st battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, between 20th March 1900 and 19th March 1908. He signed on for 4 yrs and was posted to the 1/4th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. Embodied on 5th August 1914 and promoted to Lance Corporal on 27th August 1914 he embarked from Folkstone on 13th April 1915 to join the British Expeditionary Force. He was promoted to Lance Sergeant on 1st October 1915 and died from wounds received in action on 17th October 1915 at the 1/3rd West Yorkshire Field Ambulance. He is buried in Hospital Farm Cemetery grave reference C.10
