John Beeby was born in 1878 the son of Henry a groom and later a brewery labourer and Emma Beeby (née Taylor) of High Street, Warboys, Huntingdon. His father was born in 1849 at North Fen, Huntingdon, his mother at Somersham. Married in 1869 in the St Ives registration district. They went on to have 9 children 2 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were: Lucy b.1876 Somersham, Frank b.1876 Somersham, John b.1878 Somersham, Moses b.1883, Harry b.1886, Ernest b.1890 and Charles b.1892 Warboys. By the 1901 Census, John had left the family home to live in Nottingham. He married Mary Jane Morley at Spalding in 1902 and they went on to have a son John Henry born 30th June 1903 at Nottingham. However Mary Jane died in 1903 at Nottingham aged 23. John married Lucy Florence Brown in 1905 at Nottingham and they had a daughter Muriel Agnes born 15th March 1906 at Nottingham. In 1911, the family was living at 13 Eaton Street, Mapperley, Nottingham. Commencing 27/5/1918, John's widow received a weekly pension for herself and two children (John Henry and Muriel Agnes) of 25 shillings and 5 pence (pension record card).
John Beeby enlisted in Nottingham and died of wounds. He is buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, grave reference: IV F 8.
Registers of Soldiers' Effects: his widow, Lucy, was his legatee. The pension records show he was born on 25th November 1884 and his wife was Lucy Florence Beeby, c/o Nottingham City Asylum, and she was left with two children, John Henry born 30th June 1903 (stepson) and Muriel Agnes born 15/03/1906 Nottingham Evening Post, In Memoriam 2nd November 1918 :- 'BEEBY. – In loving memory of John Beeby, who died of wounds in France November 22nd, 1917.
