He was the son of Mary Ann Topley and the brother of Alice and Eliza Ann Topley. In 1911 they lived at 137 Willoughby Street Lenton Nottingham. He was the husband of Beatrice E (née Truman) Topley of 2 Mettham Street New Lenton.
He was killed in action on his 33rd birthday and is buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Somme, France Grave Reference: VII A 10
