He was the son of Mark (died 1901) and Ada Spencer and the brother of George and Mark Spencer. In 1901 they lived at 32 Park Street Nottingham. In 1912 Ada married George Roe and they kept The Saracen's Head, North Sherwood Street, later moving to 1 Hutchinson Street, St Ann's (both Nottingham).
He attested 10/9/1914 standing 5' 3" and weighing 115 lbs. He served in Britain until 30/7/1915 when he embarked for France. He was killed in action on 11 April 1917 and is buried in Monchy British Cemetery Monchy-le-Preux Pas de Calais (grave ref. 1.F.27).
Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 25 July 1917: ‘Spencer. Killed in action, April 11th, 1917, Rifleman L Spencer, King’s Royal Rifles, aged 24, eldest beloved son of Mrs Ada Roe. Sorrowing mother and brothers (name illegible, in France)’ Personal effects returned to his mother comprised: 1 disc, Princess Mary's gift, 2 wallets, 1 tobacco pouch, photographs, letters and cards.
