Family History

He was the son of John and Emma Simpson who both pre-deceased Joseph. He was the brother of Annie (née Simpson) Parkin, Ellen (née Simpson) Preston and Emma (née Simpson) Rodgers. In 1911 the family home was at 13 Pemberton Street Nottingham although Annie and Ellen lived elsewhere. By 1918 Emma had moved to 3 Mettham Street Lenton Boulevard and later 78 Rupert Street (both Nottingham). She became Joseph's legatee (Simpson's Army Service Record [ASR]).

Military History

Joseph was conscripted and attested 10/3/1916 at Bedford and was placed in 4/8th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. He served in Britain until 12/7/1916 when he embarked for France at Folkestone. He joined 1/8th Battalion Middlesex. He was wounded 15/9/1916 and recovered in Britain until 7/3/1917 when he returned to France (ASR).
