Family History

Herbert Prior was born in 1897 he was the son of Frederick Prior a bricklayer and Emma Prior née Moore of 21 Clarence Street, Sneinton. Frederick was born in 1851 at Loughborough, Emma Moore was born in 1858 at Daybrook, they were married on 28th January 1888 at Parliament Street Chapel, Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 25 Claude Street, Dunkirk, Frederick 60 yrs is a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Emma 53 yrs and their children, Ernest 25 yrs a brick layer, Florence 20 yrs a machinist, Clara 16 yrs a grinder, Herbert 14 yrs a skin dresser and Dorothy 13 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Herbert Prior enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 8th June 1915 and is buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium. Row A. Grave 61.
