Joseph Ambrose was born in 1895 the son of Robert a colliery deputy and Catherine Naylor. He was the brother of George Henry, Gladys, Robert Harold, Lily Catherine, Clara Jane, Albert Edward and Beatrice Winifred Naylor. In 1911 they lived at 104 Montpellier Road Dunkirk.
