Family History

Sidney Victor Hickman was born in 1898 the son of Albert Edward Hickman a clerk and Elizabeth Eleanor Hickman née Vickery, of 23 Marcus Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1872 at Nottingham, his mother at Hartley Whitney Hampshire. They were married in 1894 in Hartley Whitney and had six children :- John Edward b.23/09/1896, Farnborough, Hampshire, Sidney Victor b.1898 Middlesex, William Frank Belmont b.6/06/1900 Middlesex, Frederick A b.1905 Heidleburg Transvaal South Africa, Thomas A b.1905 Johannesburg Transvaal South Africa and Eleanor E b.1910 Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 191 Bobbersmill Road Nottingham.

Military History

Sidney Victor Hickman enlisted in Nottingham on 31st August 1916 He was posted to the reserves the following day. On 2nd October 1916, aged18, he was mobilised and posted to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regiment. He landed in France 1st November 1917 and was posted to 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters in the field on 6th December 1917. He was reported missing in action between 22nd and 28th March 1918 and was eventually confirmed killed in action on 28th March. Pozieres Memorial Panel 52 to 54

Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post 27th March 1920 :- “HICKMAN. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother Sidney, 15th Sherwoods, presumed killed 27th March, 1918.
