Tom Green

Tom was the son of Tom Arthur Henry and Matilda Green (née Buxton). His father was born in East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, on 27 August 1865 and his mother Matilda Buxton in Kilburn Derbyshire, on 27 April 1866. They were married at St Wilfrid, South Wilford, Nottingham, on 4 October 1888 and had three sons, one of whom died infancy. All three children were baptised at St Wilfrid: Tom b. 1888 bap. 19 February 1893, Arthur Leonard (Leonard) b. 14 November 1892 bap. 19 February 1893 and Herman b. 1895 bap. 1 August 1895 d. 1895. In 1893 when their two oldest sons were baptised, Tom and Matilda were living at 11 Bradmore Terrace, Meadows, and at 3 Bradmore Terrace when their youngest son was baptised two years later. In 1901 the family was living in Lenton, Nottingham. Tom jnr. married Nellie (also Nelly) Bull in 1909 (J/A/S Nottingham). Nellie was born in Ripley, Derbyshire, on 25 April 1888, the daughter of Henry, a coal miner, and Ellen. She was baptised at Ripley All Saints on 13 June 1888. In 1891 the family was living in Selston, Nottinghamshire, but by 1901 Nellie was living with her grandparents, Samuel and Jane Holmes, in Ripley. Tom and Nellie had two children, Hermann b. 1909 (reg. Doncaster) who died aged 10 months on 31 July 1910, and Alice Matilda b. 10 February 1913 (reg. Nottingham). In 1911 Tom (22), a coal miner, and Nellie (22) were living in Woodlands, Doncaster, with his parents Tom, a coal miner, and Matilda, and his brother Leonard (18) a pony driver. Tom and Nellie had returned to Nottingham by February 1913 when the birth of their second child, Alice, was registered in Nottingham. Tom's parents and brother also returned to Nottingham. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, Tom and Matilda were living at 95 Briar Street, Meadows. Tom died in 1941 and Matilda on 21 December 1957; she was then living on Osman Terrace, Briar Street. Matilda made a Will and probate was awarded to Nellie Oldershaw (wife of Thomas Cecil Oldershaw), who had been married to her son Tom. Tom's brother Arthur Leonard married Gertrude Stephens in 1915. In 1939 they were living on Newcastle Road; also in the household were Minnie Green (later Williamson, b. 14 July 1918) and Gertrude Green (later Eaton, b. 15 February 1920). Leonard died on 11 May 1961; Gertrude survived him. Tom's widow Nellie married Thomas Cecil Oldershaw in 1923. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled they were living in Notingham; Nellie was a hemstitch machinist and Thomas (b. 23 July 1895) an iron moulder. The record of one other member of the household remains closed but it may have been Jack Oldershaw (b. 1924 J/F/M Nottingham, mother's prev. surname Green). Nellie died on 27 June 1981. Tom and Nellie's daughter, Alice Matilda, married John Henley in 1938. In 1939 they were living on Woodfield Road, Nottingham: John (b. 26 September 1914) a milling machine hand, Alice and their son Brian J. (b. 19 September 1938). A second child, Judith A., was born in 1941. Alice Matilda died in 1956.
