Family History

He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Hunt and the brother of Elizabeth and Louisa Hunt. They lived at 6 Kyte Street Lenton Nottingham. Bertie Gilbert was living at 9 Belmont Terrace Mansfield with an uncle.

Military History

Gilbert Hunt enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters 4th Special reserve on 27 August 1914 aged 17 years 244 days. He was eventually called up on 16 October 1917 to help replace losses sustained by the battalion on the Ypres Salient. He was injured in February 1918, falling over whilst carrying wire and injuring his hand. A court of inquiry decided it had been an accident and not self inflicted. On 18 June 1918 a raiding party of 5 officers and 130 other ranks moved into the enemy trenches behind Posen Crater taking seven prisoners, one machine gun and inflicting heavy casualties. Two officers and five other ranks from the battalion were killed and eleven wounded. Gilbert's papers have 'Reported missing believed killed'. John Morse
