Thomas Hardy was born in 1890 at Boston and was the son of Daniel a farmer and Lucy Adelaide Hardy née Baker of White House Farm, Thorney, Nottinghamshire. His father Daniel was born in 1856 at Ashton, Lancashire and his mother Lucy Adelaide Baker was also born in 1856 at Scarcliffe, Derbyshire, they were married in 1886 at Newark and went on to have the following children, James b1887 Boston.Alice b1888 Boston, Thomas b1890 Boston, Eve b1892 Boston, Richard b1894 Boston, John b1898 Thorney and Adelaide Caroline b 1899 Thorney. In the 1911 censusthe family are living at Westwood Farm, Thorney and are shown as Daniel Hardy 55 years a farmer, he is living with his wife Lucy Adelaide 55 yrs and their children Alice 23 yrs a dairy worker, Thomas 21 yrs a farmers son, Eve 19 yrs a dairy worker, Richard 17 yrs a farmers son, John 13 yrs a scholar, Adelaide Caroline 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Thomas Hardy was called up for service and enlisted at Newark on 28th April 1916, he gave his age as 26 yrs and 205 days, his address as West Road Farm, Thorney, Nottinghamshire and his next of kin as his father Daniel of the same address, he stated he was a farmer. He was posted to the 3rd battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. Promoted to Lance Corporal n 24th July 1916 and to acting Corporal on 15th May 1917. He embarked from Folkstone on 5th February 1918 and arrived the same day at Boulogne, France. He joined the 9th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment in the filed on 13th February 1918. He was wounded in action by a shell and admitted to 48th field ambulance on 12th May 1918. He was transferred tot he 29th casualty clearing station and on 14th May 1918 and was admitted to the 9th General Hospital in Rouen where on 16th May 1918 he died of his wounds. He is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France.
