Family History

William was born in 1888 in Sneinton, Nottingham and was the son of William a shopkeeper and Mary Ann (Polly) White née Foster who lived at 9 Pipe Street, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1837 in Befordshire and his mother Mary Ann Foster was born in 1861 in Nantwich, Cheshire, they were married in 1878 in South Shields and had the following children, Thomas b1879 Warrington, Henry b1884 Warington, William b1888 Nottingham, Minnie b1892 Nottingham, Alfred b1896 Nottingham and Ruby b1899 Nottingham. In the 1911 census we find William 22 yrs a soldier serving with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment who are in Barracks in India He married his wife Margaret Ann Jobling on 1st September 1915 in the Parish Church at Whitburn, South Shields, they later went on to have a daughter Louisa born 26th November 1915 in South Shields.

Military History

Private William White enlisted at Nottingham, on 3rd August 1906, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 1 month he gave his residence as Sneinton and was a coal miner. He initially served with service number 10151 in the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters ( Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment seeing service in India from 5th January 1909 until 2nd September 1914 when the division was returned to England . He landed at Le Harve with his battalion on 4th November 1914 joining the British Expeditionary Force. He was promoted to Corporal on 19th April 1916 but later reverted to Private. He later transferred to the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment and was serving with this regiment when he was killed in action on 30th December 1917. He is buried in Ribecourt British Cemetery, Nord, France grave reference II C 32.
