John Samuel Ward was born in 1896 at Basford and was the son of Samuel a brewers waggoner and Elizabeth Ward née Thompson of 24 Suez Street, Basford, Nottingham. His father Samuel Ward was born in 1867 at Wellow, Notts and his mother Elizabeth Thompson was born in 1867 at Lambley, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham and went on to the the following children, Edith Elizabeth b1890 Nottingham, Minnie Cordelia b1894 Basford, John Samuel b1896 Basford and Arthur Thompson b1899 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Suez Street, Basford and are shown as Samuel 44 yrs a brewers waggoner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 44 yrs and their children, Edith Elizabeth 21 yrs a blouse machinist, Minnie Cordelia 17 yrs a blouse machinist, John Samuel 15 yrs a jacker off and Arthur Thompson 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Lance Corporal John Samuel Ward enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7thbattalion Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France on 18th August 1915 and was killed in action on 21st March 1918 and is buried in Queant Road cemetery, Buissey, France , grave reference VI.D.4
