Family History

George William Wright was born in 1899 at Basford and was the son of James a machine packer and builder and Gertrude Mary Wright née Thornton of 34 Egypt Road, New Basford, Nottingham. His father James was born in 1869 at Basford, his mother Gertrude Mary Thornton was born in 1871 also at Basford, they were married at St Peter's Church, Nottingham on 30th July 1892. They went on to have 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Violet b1894, Mabel b1895, George William b1899 and John Henry b1910 all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family were living at 34 Egypt Road, New Basford and were shown as James 42 yrs a machine packer and builder, he is living with his wife Gertrude Mary 40 yrs and their children, Violet 17 yrs a shop assistant, Mabel 16 yrs a hosiery maker upper, George 12 yrs a scholar and John Henry 1 year of age.

Military History

Private George William Wright enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/4th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 27th March 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial Nay 7.
