George Thomas Parkin was born in 1889 at Sutton on Trent, Newark and was the son of George Parkin an estate horseman on a farm and Phoebe Parkin née Briggs. of Holbeck, Welbeck, Nottinghamshire. His father George was born in 1861 at Sutton on Trent, his mother Phoebe Briggs was born in 1861 at Long Bennington, they were married on 21st October 1880 at Long Bennington and had the following children, Mary b1887 Sutton on Trent, George b1888 Sutton on Trent, Minnie b1891 Bassingham, Emma b1894 Papplewick, Joseph b1895 Papplewick, Henry b1897 Papplewick, Ethel b1899 Papplewick, Catherine b1903 Papplewick and Lottie b1907 at Ragnall. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Main Street, Norton Cuckney and are shown as George Parkin 53 yrs an estate horseman on a farm, he is living with his wife Phoebe 53 yrs and their children, Mary 24 yrs a domestic servant, Minnie 19 yrs a domestic servant, Joseph 16 yrs a farm labourer, Henry 14 yrs a farm labourer, Ethel 12 yrs a scholar, Catherine 8 yrs a scholar and Lottie 4 yrs of age. George Thomas Parkin married his wife Annie Florence Pearson (born 3rd May 1891) in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they lived at 169 Gregory Boulevard, Hyson Green, Nottingham, they went on to have a son William Parkin born 28th May 1916. Following his death his widow Annie Florence was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 14th April 1919.

Military History

Private George Thomas Parkin enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 19th September 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois memorial.
