Family History

Walter John Clarke was born in 1893 in Basford and was the son of Alfred John a wheelwright and coach builder and Maria Clarke née Layton of 31 Howitt Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father Alfred John was born in 1891 in Peterborough and his mother Maria Layton was born in Northampton, they were married on 1st August 1887 at St Pauls parish church , Northampton and went on to have 9 children , sadly one was to die in infancy their surviving children were Alfred Thomas Layton b1891 Peterborough, Lucy Ellen b1892 Peterborough, Walter John b1893 Basford, Wilfred Samuel b1896 Basford, Sarah Emily b1899 Basford, Florence May b1901 Basford, Edith Marie Winifred b1903 Basford and Gertrude Rose Clarke b1904 Basford In the 1901 and 1911 census the family are living at 31 Howitt Street Hyson Green Nottingham., in the 1911 census are shown as Alfred John 48 yrs a wheelwright and coach builder, he is living with his wife Maria 46 yrs and their children , Alfred Thomas 20 yrs a drapers assistant, Lucy Ellen 19 yrs a dressmaker, Walter John a coach trimmer, Wilfred 15 yrs a coal merchant, Sarah Emily 12 yrs a scholar, Florence May 10 yrs a scholar, Edith Maria 8 yrs a scholar and Gertrude Rose 7 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Corporal Walter John Clarke enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters , he was killed in action on 21st June 1917 when the trench he was in was hit by enemy shellfire. He was buried in Vlamertinghe New Military cemetery, Belgium.
