Percy Herbert Clarke

Percy was the son of William Clarke and his wife Annie Elizabeth nee Tandy. William was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and Annie Elizabeth in Basford. They were married in 1876 (O/N/D Nottingham) and according to the 1911 Census had eight children of whom only seven survived. Seven children have been identified on the census between 1881 and 1911: Ernest Frank b. 1877 (A/M/J Nottingham), Marie Louise b. 11 June 1878 (J/A/S Nottingham), William Frederick (Willie) birth registered 1881 (J/F/M), Lillian (Lily) Ann/Annie b. 1883 (O/N/D Nottingham, 1939 Register gives DOB 17 December 1882), Arthur Edward b. 1889 (J/A/S Basford), Florence Adelaide (Adelaide) b. 20 April 1892 (A/M/J Basford) and Percy Herbert b. 1894 (A/M/J Basford). All the children except Lilian and Arthur who were born in Sherwood were born in Nottingham. The 1881 Census names a daughter, Anna b. abt 1879, but no other record has been traced for this child. In 1881 William (26), a lace maker, and Annie (29) a brass bobbin winder (lace) were living with Annie's parents Samuel Tandy (60), a lace maker, his wife Maria (57) and daughter Clara (17) at 23 Preston Terrace, Nottingham. Three children were named on the census: Ernest (4), Anna (2) and William (1 month). By 1891 the family was living at 18 Hall Street, Carrington. William and Annie now had five children: Ernest (14), Marie (12), William (10), Lilian and Arthur (7). William (47) and Annie (50) had moved to 6 Cardwell Street, Hyson Green by 1901. William (20) a threader in the lace trade, Lilian (18) a machinist, Arthur (11), Adelaide (8) and Percy (6) were in the home on the night of the census. Marie had married in 1900 and was living independently and Ernest has not yet been traced on this census. By 1911 William and Annie were living at 22 Cardwell Street, Hyson Green, and this is likely to have been the family home for many years. Five of their seven children were in the house on the night of the census: William (30) 'a billiard saloon' (own account), Lilian (28) a machinist, Arthur (21) a butcher, Adelaide (18) a machinist and Percy (17) who was in the hosiery trade but not in work. Ernest has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. Percy's father William died on 28 April 1920 aged 66, and his mother Annie Elizabeth died on 26 July 1928 aged 78. Of Percy's siblings: Ernest Frank died on 5 June 1929 at Bagthorpe Infirmary, Nottingham; his home address was 22 Cardwell Street. His brother Arthur, an iron fitter's assistant, was his executor. Marie Louise married Arthur Brailsford (b. 20 August 1870) in 1900 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1911 they were living at 19 Selhurst Street, Nottingham; Arthur was working as a grocer. At the time of the 1939 England & Wales Register they were still at the same address; Arthur's occupation was given as jewellery retailer. Living with them was Marie's widowed sister, Lilian Sheppard. Marie Louise died on 16 July 1972 aged 94. William Frederick may have died in 1937 (O/N/D Nottingham) at the age of 56. Lilian Ann married John F Sheppard in 1918 (A/M/J Nottingam). She was widowed by 1939 and living with her married sister Marie Brailsford at 19 Selhurst Street, Nottingham. Lilian died aged 70 in 1953 (J/F/M Nottingham), burial 27 February. Arthur Edward served during the war. He attested on 26 March 1916 but was not mobilised until 5 October 1918. He served in the UK in the Royal Army Service Corps (HT), 440824 Private, and was demobilised in December 1919 to 22 Cardwell Street. Arthur died in 1960 (O/N/D Nottingham) Florence Adelaide narried Ernest Fell (b. 16 December 1892) in 1914 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1939 she and Ernest, a packer (cigarettes and tobacco) were living at 20 Western Gardens, Nottingham, with their children Renee Vera (b. 27 February 1916) a weigher (tobacco), and Kenneth E. (b. 18 September 1920) an electrician. Florence died in 1977 (O/N/D Nottingham) aged 85.
