Charles was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the son of the late James Burton a lace maker and Eliza Burton née Hyson of 3 Archer Street Hyson Green Nottingham. His father James was born in 1858 in Radford and his mother Eliza Ann Hyson was born in 1858 in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 in Radford and went on to have 11 children , sadly three of whom died in infancy or early childhood , their surviving children all born in Nottingham were Nellie b1882, Emma b1884, James b1886, John b1888, William b1889, Charles b1892, George b1895 and Annie b1896. His father died in 1897 in Nottingham , he was 39 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Citadel Street, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as Eliza 53 yrs a widow, she is living with her children , James 25 yrs an iron turner, Will 21 yrs a printers labourer, Charlie 18 yrs a printers labourer, George 16 yrs a toy maker and Annie 15 yrs an errand girl.
Private Charles Burton, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he landed in France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th September 1914 ( CWGC give 21st ) and is buried in Vendresse British Cemetery.
His brother Private George Burton, served with the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 25th August 1917. He is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery. He was the 20 year-old son of Mrs. Eliza Burton, of 3 Archer Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. In memoriam published 25th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BURTON. – In loving memory of Pte. George Burton, killed in action August 25th, 1917; also Pte. Charles Burton, killed in action September 20th, 1914.
