Bertie Harold Burrows

Bertie was the son of William and Alice Burrows. By the time of the 1911 Census when William and Alice had been married for 21 years, they had had seven children of whom only five were still living. Five children were named on the 1891 and 1911 census: Charles birth registered 1890 (J/F/M Nottingham), Bertie birth registered 1894 J/F/M Shardlow Derbyshire), Lydia Florence b. 5 November 1898 (O/N/D Shardlow), Ethel May b. 9 June 1901 (J/A/S Shardlow), and Elizabeth Helen b. 1908 (A/M/J Nottingham). Charles and Elizabeth were born in Nottingham and Bertie, Lydia and Ethel in Derbyshire, probably Long Eaton. In 1891 William (24), a lace maker, and his wife Alice (20) were living in Long Eaton with their one year old son, Charles. By 1911 they were living in Nottingham at 17 Archer Street off Radford Road, Hyson Green. All five surviving children were still living at home: Charles (21) a printer, Bertie (17) a hosiery finisher, Lydia (12), Ethel (9) and Elizabeth (2). They were still living at the same address when Bertie died in May 1917. It is likely that Bertie's mother, Alice Burrows, died in 1939 (September Nottingham) aged 68. Of Bertie's four siblings: Charles also served in the war and was serving in France at the time of his brother Bertie's death in 1917. He married Sabina Pinkney in 1915 (A/M/J Nottingham). Charles died on 19 October 1937; he and his wife, who survived him, were then living at 30 Bobbers Mill Road, Nottingham. Lydia Florence married Harry Housden in 1922 (A/M/J Nottingham. Harry died in July 1931 (Sep Nottingham) aged 33. Lydia remarried in 1933 (J/A/S Nottingham) to Chevral Seagrave (b. 7 February 1895). In 1939 at the time of the 1939 England and Wales Register, Lydia, a hosiery mender, and Chevral, an interior decorator, were living in Nottingham. She died on 6 January 1970. Ethel probably married Stanley Shields (b. 12 August 1899) in 1925 (J/A/S Nottingham and in 1939 she and Stanley were living in Nottingham with their son Peter John (b. 28 July 1932). Ethel died on 10 October 1957; she was then living at Long Hedge Old People's Home, Magson Close, St Ann's, Nottingham. Elizabeth probably married Arthur Allen in 1931 (O/N/D Nottingham).
