Family History

Lawrence Rakin Augustus Blower was born in 1893 in Cotmanhay and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Sophia Blower née Hunt of 6 Lambert Street, Hyson Green Nottingham. His father Thomas Blower was born in 1856 in Staffordshire and his mother Sophia Hunt was born in 1859 at Swanwick, Derbyshire, they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Belper Registration District, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1901/1911 census are Mary Ann b1881 at Radford, Arthur b1884 Featherstone, Yorkshire, , Sarah b1886 Cotmanhay, Bertha b1888 Cotmanhay, John Charles b1890 Cotmanhay Lawrence b1893 Cotmanhay, Lucy b1897 Cotmanhay and Thomas b1900 Cotmanhay. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Lambert Street, Hyson Green and are shown as Thomas 53 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Sophia 50 yrs and their children, Bertha 23 yrs a blouse maker, John Charles 21 yrs a coal miner, Lucy 14 yrs a factory girl and Thomas 11 yrs. In the 1911 census Lawrence is shown as being 17 yrs and single and serving in the Special Reserve at the Normanton barracks at Derby. His brother John Charles Blower married his wife Lilian Bragg on 5th October 1912 at St Stephens church, they went on to have 2 children, Thomas William born 16th January 1914 and Lilian May born 16th September 1915, they lived at 6 Wilford Terrace, Bridlington Street, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Lawrence Rankin Augustus Blower joined up at Nottngham with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters when they returned from India. He went to France with them on 4 November 1914. The 31 July 1917 saw the start of 3rd Ypres, with the Battle of Pilckem. The battalion attacked through Hooge and Bellewaarde towards Westhoek and the objective. They came under heavy machine gun fire from Hanebeek valley, some 700 yards away and Glencorse Wood on the right flank. They were pulled back to the shelter of Westhoek Ridge. At some point Lawrence was killed. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery grave XLVIII. A. 7. (Military information provided by John Morse)

Extra Information

His brother John Charles Blower enlisted on 22nd March 1915 at Nottingham, he served with the Northumberland Fusiliers , he embarked on 25th November 1915 for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He served there until 4th July 1916 when he embarked from Alexandria and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 10th July 1916. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 7th December 1916 and served until 29th January 1919 when he was demobilised.
