George Vickers was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the only son of George William a general carter and Emma Vickers née Bilbie of Scarrington Villas, Nuthall Road, Cinder Hill, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1873 in Hawsworth and his mother Emma Bilbie was born in 1875 at Moor Green they were married on 22nd December 1897 at St Mary's Ilkeston, they had a further daughter Ethel May born 1905 also in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are shown living at 2 Thurlow Street, Old Basford, Nottingham and are shown as George William 38 yrs a general carter for the Co operative Society, he is living with his wife Emma 36 yrs and their 2 children, George 12 yrs a scholar and Ethel May 6 yrs a scholar.
Private George Vickers enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/5th battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 28th September 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 6 January 1919: 'Vickers. Killed in action September 28th 1918, Private George Vickers, 1/5th South Staffordshire, age 19, only son of George and Emma Vickers, Cinderhill.' Obituaries in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 6th January 1919: - “VICKERS. - Reported missing, now reported killed in action Sept. 28th, 1918, Pte. George Vickers, 1/5th South Staffs., aged 19 years, dearly loved and only son of George and Emma Vickers, Cinder Hill. - Sorrowing father, mother, sister, and May. “VICKERS. - Reported wounded and missing, now reported killed in action Sept. 28th, 1918, Pte. George Vickers, 1/5th South Staffs. Fondly remembered; ever in our thoughts. - Grandfather, uncles and aunts (a. and A. Vickers and Wm. And K.
