Family History

George Leverton was born in 1893 at Cinderhill and was the youngest son of William a colliery blacksmith and the late Mary Leverton, née Basford of 18 Holden Square, Cinderhill. His father William Leverton was born in 1850 at Bulwell and his mother Mary Jane Basford was born in 1858 at Wymeswold, Leicestershire, they were married n 1887 at Nottingham and had 9 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their children all born in Cinderhill were, Alfred b1881, Annie b1888, Fred b1890, George b1893, Elizabeth b1898 and Ellen b1900. In the 1911 census the family are living at 18 Holden Square, Cinderhill and are shown as William 61 yrs a colliery blacksmith, he is living with his wife Mary 53 yrs and their children, Annie 23 yrs a house keeper at home, Fred 21 yrs a bricklayers labourer, George 18 yrs a colliery banksman, Elizabeth 13 yrs a scholar and Ellen 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Driver George Leverton enlisted at Nottingham and served with 'D' Battery 49th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, he landed in France on 8th September 1915, he was killed in action on 2nd October 1916 and is buried at Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban grave reference A.18
