He was the son of John (1869-1928) an Iron Foundry Moulder and Ellen (née Bates) Dodsley (1872-1950). He was the brother of Ann, Florence, Sarah Ellen, Nellie, Frank and Arthur Dodsley. In 1911 they lived at 12 Portland Road West Bridgford Nottingham. At the date of William’s death the family lived at 215 Cinderhill Road Bulwell Nottingham.
He died of wounds and is buried in Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery Grave Reference: 2 D 37 )
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 21 October 1916: 'Dodsley. Died of wounds September 26th 1916, Private WG Dodsley, Grenadier Guards, of 215 Cinderhill Road, age 22.'
