Family History

Ernest Wright Thorpe was born in 1895 at North Scarle and was the son of John a farmer and Lucy Thorpe née Wright of North Scarle. His father John was born in 1856 at North Scarle and his mother Lucy Wright was born in 1859 at Radcliffe on Trent, they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Elizabeth b1881, George b1883, Sidney John b1885, Frank b1889, Lucy b1891, Annie b1893, Ernest b1895, Fred b1897, Norah b1901 and Bertie b1904 all were born in North Scarle. In the 1911 census the family are living at North Scarle and were shown as John 55 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Lucy 52 yrs and their children, George 28 yrs a brick layer, Sidney John 26 yrs a brick layer, Frank 22 yrs a horseman on a farm, Annie 18 yrs a general servant, Ernest 16 yrs a station porter, Fred 14 yrs a farm worker, Norah 10 yrs a scholar and Bertie 7 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Ernest Wright Thorpe enlisted at Newark-on-Trent he served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 and is buried at Wieltje Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
