William Hyde

William was born in 1882 in Thorneywood, Nottingham, and was the son of Henry a stationary engine driver and Sarah Hyde of Pretoria Cottages, 222 Sneinton Hill, Carlton. His father Henry was born in 1854 in Tickhill and his mother Sarah Berry was born in 1857 in Carlton; they were married in 1877 in Nottingham. They went on to have 9 children, one of whom sadly died in infancy. William married his wife Hannah Wheat in 1901; their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to have 3 children, Winifred, Elsie and Arnold, all born in Carlton. The family lived at 19 High Church Street, Basford. In 1911 census William and his family are living at 19 High Church Street, Basford, Nottingham and are shown as William 29 yrs a slotter in the lace machine building industry, he is living with his wife Hannah 27 yrs a net lace mender and their children, Winifred 9 yrs a scholar, Elsie 7 yrs a scholar and Arnold 4 yrs. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Pretoria Cottages 222 Sneinton Hill Carlton and are shown as Henry 57 yrs a stationary engine driver; he is living with his wife Sarah 54 yrs and their two sons Joseph 15 yrs a hairdresser and Arthur 17 yrs a sailor. William's younger brother, Joseph, served in the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (32254 Private) and was killed in France on 3 September 1916 (Knightsbridge Cemetery). His widow Hannah received a letter from the War Office dated 10th October 1916 informing her she would be receiving a pension of 21 shillings and 6 pence in respect of herself and her three children with effect from 16th October 1916.
