Family History

Ernest George Cole was born in 1875 at Camberwell, he was baptised on 31st October 1875 at St Stephens Church, Walworth, Surrey He was the son of the late Alexander Jordon Cole a gas fitter and the late Elizabeth Charlotte Cole née Urquhart. Alexander Jordon Cole was born in 1841 at Glasgow he died in 1911 aged 70 yrs, Elizabeth Charlotte Urquhart was born in 1842 in Battersean, London, she died in 1901 in London aged 61 yrs, they were married on 25th October 1863 at St Barnabus, London they had 6 children. Ernest George married Edith Emma Price (born 3rd June 1876 at Rotherhithe, Surrey) on 26th December 1903 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, they had 4 children, Alexander Edward born 22nd March 1904, Stanley Ernest born 13th July 1909 and Gilbert George Cole born 23rd February 1911 a fourth son Leonard Urquhart was born on 2nd February 1914 he died however on 15th January 1915 the family lived at 24 Thorneywood Rise, Nottingham. In 1911 the family lived at 65 Randolph Street Nottingham Ernest is 35 yrs and insurance salesman, he is living with Edith Emma, 31 yrs and their children, Alexander Edward 7 yrs, Stanley Ernest 1 year and Gilbert George 5 weeks Commencing 24th April 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 23 shillings a week.

Military History

Private Ernest George Cole enlisted on 14th August 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 28 yrs and 88 days, (he was in fact 38 yrs old) he was a window cleaner residing at 2 Marmion Road, Thorneywood, Nottingham. He went to France 17th August 1915 and was killed in action, 5th October 1915, aged 40, by German shellfire, prior to their attack on the British lines at Oder Houses near Potijze, Belgium. he is buried at Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery, Belgium.
