Family History

Thomas Albert Reynolds was born in 1897 at Bulwell, Nottinghamshire. His father and mother were Israel and Ann Reynolds, née Townsend and had married at Basford in 1891. Thomas’s father worked as a platelayer on the Great Northern Railway. The family moved to Bestwood around 1898 and by 1911 were resident at GNR Cottages, Bestwood Colliery. Apart from Thomas, Israel and Ann produced six more children, Sarah, 1893, William 1896, Ann 1899, George 1901, Harry 1907, Violet 1908. When he reached only 14, Thomas had started work , working as a coal miner, underground.

Military History

Thomas joined up for the war from Nottingham. Some confusion between records exist. He is attributed to have served with the 1st Battalion of the Dorset Regiment but Ancestry Soldiers Died claim he firstly joined the ‘Hussars of the Line, number 14254 and his medal card records him in the 5th Battalion Dorset’s and that his first theatre of war was the Balkans, leaving on 9 Sept 1915. His next known record is his death in France on 1st July 1916, in the 1st Battalion, Dorset’s. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
