Charles James and Susannah Connington married in 1870 at St Ives, Huntingdonshire. Charles earnt his living as a house painter. With their first three children, Charles, William and Harry they moved to Bestwood, Notts, around 1877. They had another five children Francis, Ruth, Thomas, Stephen and George all born in Bestwood their address for many years being 34 Bestwood Colliery. As his boys grew up Harry, Thomas and George, followed in their father’s painting trade. Of the six boys, it is known that at least Thomas (born 1885) volunteered and fought in the Army in WW1.
Thomas James enlisted at Nottingham in the 1/5th Battaliom Northumberland Fusiliers Territorial Force. The Battalion was mobilised in April 1915 for war and Landed in France where the formation became 149th Brigade of the 50th Division and engaged in various actions on the Western Front. Thomas was killed in action but as his body was never recovered he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
