Family History

John Cowie was born and living in Aberdeen and migrated south sometime between 1881 and 1891 as it was in 1891 that he married Emily Jane Burr at Loddon in the district of Norfolk where she was a native. They settled in Sunningdale, Ascot, Berkshire where John took up employment as a gardener. The couple had six children, all born in Sunningdale, Alan born 1891, Walter James 1892, Leonard 1894, Olive1897, Ivy 1906 and Molly 1910. By 1911, Walter had left the family home and was working as a domestic gardener at Kings Ride, Ascot, and residing with two other gardeners there. He must have moved to Bestwood, Notts sometime after 1911 as he is recorded on four Bestwood memorials and enlisted at Nottingham.

Military History

Walter James Cowie enlisted at Nottingham. His choice of regiment was the first battalion of the Gordon Highlanders (possibly influenced by his father’s Scottish ancestry) and served with B Company. He fought in France at the Somme and was wounded. He died of his wounds and is buried in the La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie in the Somme area, France
