He was the son of John (died 1904) and Hannah Tansley and the brother of Frederick, Elizabeth, Jane, William, Joseph, Ada Sarah, Horace, George and Florence Tansley. In 1901 the family lived at 22 Lincoln Street and in 1911 at 21 Rydal Grove (both Basford Nottingham). He was the husband of Amy (née Tollington) Tansley who, by 1/8/1917, lived at 37 Silverdale Road Old Basford Nottingham (Tansley's Army Service Record).
Private George Tansley, enlisted in Nottingham on 15th January 1916, he was 24 yrs of age and a hosiery trimmer, he lived at 32 White Street, Old Basford and his mother Hannah of the same address was his next of kin. The following day he was placed into the reserves. On 22nd February 1916 he was mobilised and placed into the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters. On 2nd March 1917 he landed in France and on 23rd March 1917 he was posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action 4th April 1917, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Death notices published 30th April 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TANSLEY. – Killed in action, April 4th, Private G. Tansley, Sherwood Foresters, of 37, Silverdale-road, Basford, aged 26. I miss him and mourn him in silence unseen, and dwell on the happiness that might have been. Gone from my side, but not from my heart. – His sorrowing wife Amy. “TANSLEY. – Killed in action, April 4th, Private G. Tansley, Sherwood Foresters, aged 26. A bitter blow, a shock severe, to part with one we loved so dear. – From his mother, sisters, brothers, and Percy and Will (in France).” In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 3rd April 1918 :- “TANSLEY. – In loving memory of Pte. G. Tansley, killed in action April 4th, 1917. He gave his all. – From his mother, sisters, and brothers, and Joe in France.” In memoriam published 4th April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TANSLEY. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. George Tansley, killed in action April 4th, 1917. Days of sadness still come o'er me, tears of sorrow often flow, memory keeps my loved on near me, whom God claimed two years ago. – Sadly missed by his loving wife Amy. “TANSLEY. – In loving memory of Pte. George Tansley, killed in action April 4th, 1917. A day of memory, sad to recall. – Brother, sister, Horace, and Sarah. “TANSLEY. – In loving memory of my dear son and our brother, Pte. G. Tansley, killed in action April 4th, 1917.
