Ronald Stirland was born in 1895 at Basford and was the son of Hebert a colliery engine cleaner and Ada Ann Stirland née Braithwaite of 76 Bailey Street, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Herbert Stirland was born in 1865 at Bulwell and his mother Ada Ann Braithwaite was born in 1862 in Basford, they were married in 1886, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 4 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Basford and were Roland b1892, Ronald b1895 and Edwin b1897. In the 1911 census the family are living at 76 Bailey Street, Basford and are shown as Herbert 46 yrs a colliery engine cleaner, he is livng with his wife Ada Ann 49 yrs and their children Roland 19 yrs a colliery boiler stoker and Ronald 16 yrs a colliery loco cleaner. also living with them is Ann Stirland 84 yrs his widowed mother.

Military History

Private Ronald Stirland enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment he was killed in action on 18th September 1918 and is buried in Epehy Wood Cemetery, Epehy, Somme, France grave reference II.D. 2
