Family History

Arthur Smith was born in 1885 at Duffiled Derbyshire and was the son of Thomas a labourer and Harriett Smith of Tamworth Street, Duffield. His father Thomas was born in 1854 in Duffield and his mother Harriett was born in 1847 also in Duffield, they went on to have the following children, William b1870, Joseph b1877, Albert b1878, John b1880, Arthur b1885, Harriett b1887, Violet b1891 and Rose b1893, all were born in Duffield. In the 1911 census his father and siblings were living at Tamworth Street, Duffield. and were shown as Thomas 57 yrs a widow and labourer, he is living with his children, Harriett 22 yrs a factory machinist, Violet 20 yrs a factory machinist and Rose 18 yrs no occupation listed. He was married to his wife Phyllis Clara Hale on 12th April 1909 at Christ Church, Belper, they went on to have a daughter Essie who was baptised on 3rd October 1909 In the 1911 census he is living at Tamworth Street Duffield and is shown as Arthur 25 yrs a labourer a dyer in cotton works, he is living with his wife Phyillis Clara 23 yrs and their daughter Ellis 7 months.

Military History

Private Arthur Smith enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Basford, he served with the 8th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He died on 19th December 1918 and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany grave reference XVIII. G.37
