Allen Vessey was born in 1897 at Basford and was the son of Vessey a general labourer and Mary Shipman née Clarke . His father Vassey was born in 1863 in Kneeton, Nottinghamshire, and his mother Mary Clarke was born in 1861 in Dunholme, Lincolnshire. They were married in Nottingham in 1883 and went on to have four children all born in Basford: Edith b1888, Eveline b1893, Allen b1897 and Hilda b1900. In the 1911 census the family lived at 14 Reigate Road, Old Basford, Nottingham, and were shown as Vessey 48 yrs head of the family a general labourer, his wife Mary and their four children, Edith 23 yrs a lace finisher, Eveline 18 yrs a lace dresser, Allen 14 yrs a grocers shop assistant and Hilda 11 yrs a scholar. His parents were still living at the same address when the CWGC record was compiled.
Private Allen V Shipman enlisted in Nottingham. He served with 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in the Gallipoli campaign. At some point he was posted to 2nd Battalion; a number of men wounded or taken ill in Gallipoli were sent to 1st or 2nd battalions on recovery. He was wounded in action in 1917 and medically evacuated to Wharncliffe War Hospital, Sheffield, where he died of his wounds on 2nd March 1917. CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'Duty nobly done' Nottingham Evening Post, 'Roll of Honour', 5 March 1917: 'Shipman. Died of wounds in hospital, Sheffield, Lance Corporal (sic) Allan Shipman, only son of Mr and Mrs Shipman, Basford, age 20. Father, mother, sisters.' 'In memoriam' notice published 2nd March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- SHIPMAN. – In loving memory of our only son and brother Allen, of 14, Reigate-road, who died of wounds received in action March 2nd, 1917.
